Aval Kara Pidi Kozhukattai is a delicious savoury kozhukattai variety made with Aval or Poha (flattened rice ) along with spices and green chilies.This Aval Kozhukattai is a very simple recipe and can be done in a jiffy for Vinayagar Chaturthi festival , if you are pressed for time and looking for spicy kozhukattai variety then this is the recipe for you.
Traditionally Kozhukattai or dumplings are made using processed rice flour which requires a lengthy preparations and then a stuffing is made and then shaped to modaks . Apparently this Pidi Kozhukattai is a simpler version where we don’t use stuffing it is just the rice flour that is tempered and steam cooked.Here in this recipe we have used flattened rice or Poha instead of rice flour rest of the process is the same.
For Preparing this Aval Kara Kozhukattai firstly dry roast the Aval and powder it to rava consistency.In a kadai tempering is added and required water is brought to rolling boil along with salt and then the powdered Aval is added and mixed swiftly without any lumps and make to non sticky rava Upma consistency . This mixture is cooled down a bit until lukewarm and then rolled to cylindrical shapes and pressed between fingers to get the grooves and steamed cooked for 5 minutes.
This Aval Kozhukattai is believed to have originated from South India where Aval has been a part of most festivities for making sweets and savouries.
To make it even more healthy you can add grated carrots, coconut and boiled green gram dal etc..

Ingredients
Aval(Poha/flattened rice)-1 1/2 cups
Salt to taste
Mustard Seeds-1/2 Tsp
Urad dal dal -1 tsp
Bengal gram dal -1 Tsp
Cumin seeds-1 Tsp
Green chillies-1-2 nos
Curry leaves-few finely chopped
Coriander leaves- few finely chopped
Oil -1 Tbsp

Method
👉Dry roast the Aval /Poha for 2 minutes in medium flame until light golden brown colour, transfer to mixie jar and powder it to rava consistency set aside .
👉Heat oil in a kadai add mustard seeds, urad dal, Bengal gram dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chilies and coriander leaves and sauté well .
👉Add 1 1/2 cups of water and required salt and bring to a rolling boil .
👉Add the powdered Aval and mix everything well swiftly without any lumps in medium flame and cook until it forms a non sticky mixture. Switch off the gas and allow it to cool down a bit.
👉Grease the steamer plate with oil or cover with banana leaf and also grease your palm with oil.While lukewarm make cylindrical shapes and press between your fingers to create pidi Kozhukattai shapes.
👉Boil water in a steamer and place the steamer plate on it and cover it with lid.
👉Steam cook for just 5 minutes.
👉Serve by garnishing with finely chopped coriander leaves and freshly grated coconut if desired.
