How to make traditional green tomato chutney or thakkali Kai chutney
Green Tomato Chutney, also known as Thakkali Kai Chutney in Tamil, is a delicious and traditional South Indian chutney made with raw, unripe tomatoes. This chutney is a popular dish in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Telangana regions.
To make this flavorful chutney, you will need basic pantry staples along with the hero ingredient - raw, unripe green tomatoes. Begin by sautéing raw peanuts until they turn a light golden brown, then set them aside. Next, sauté small onions, garlic, green chilies, red chilies, and green tomatoes, grated coconut , tamarind and salt. Grind all the ingredients together into a fine paste consistency without adding any water. Finally, give the chutney a basic tempering and mix well.
This green tomato chutney pairs perfectly with idli, dosa, chapati, and even steamed rice.
