Vazhakkai Puttu also known as Vazhakkai Podimas is a delicious traditional South Indian dish made with raw plantain (called as Vazhakkai in Tamil), spices and coconut.This Vazhakkai Puttu is a very popular in South India especially in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.It is a
simple and easy to prepare dish and can be done quickly.
Traditionally this Vazhakkai Podimas/ Puttu will be white in colour but here I have added turmeric powder to make it look more appealing, you can avoid it if you don’t want to.
To prepare this recipe firstly the raw plantain must be cooked in boiling water until its 3/4 done make sure not to overcook it.Then skin is peeled and plantain is grated using a grater.Now in a kadai a tempering of mustard seeds, urad dal cumin seeds red chilli and curry leaves, then green chillies, ginger and onions are added and sautéed well.To this turmeric powder and required salt is mixed well. Finally cooked and grated Vazhakkai is added given a gentle mix and sautéed in medium heat for few minutes and then garnished with grated coconut and coriander leaves,that’s it a delectable accompaniment for rice , sambar, vatha kulambu, rasam etc .. is ready.

Ingredients-


Raw plantain (Vaazhaikai)-2 nos
Onion -1-2 nos
Ginger -1 inch piece
Green chillies -2-3 nos
Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp (optional)
Asafoetida -1/4 tsp
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Urad dal-1 tsp
Cumin seeds -1 tsp 
Red chillies -2 nos
Grated Coconut-1 -2 Tbsps
Curry leaves -few
Coriander leaves 
Salt to taste 
Oil-2 tsps

Method 

👉Cook the raw plantains until 3/4 done in boiling water making sure not to overcook.Remove the skin and grate the plantains using a grater .Set aside.


👉Heat oil in a kadai add mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilli, cumin seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida and allow it to splutter.



👉Next add green chillies, ginger and chopped onions and sauté well.until the onions are done.


👉Add in turmeric powder, required salt and mix well 




👉Finally add the cooked shredded Vazhakkai mix everything gently and continue to cook in medium flame for 2-4 minutes.


👉Garnish with coconut and fresh coriander leaves.




👉Switch off the gas and serve hot.
