Vazhakkai Varuval | Raw Banana Fry


Vazhakkai Varuval, also known as raw banana fry, is a popular South Indian style roast (fry) made with raw plantains that are first boiled, then smeared with masala paste and roasted in a tawa until golden brown and crispy. This vazhakkai varuval pairs beautifully with sambar, rasam, curd rice, and other South Indian dishes. Follow the steps below to prepare this delicious crispy vazhakkai varuval (raw banana roast).

Ingredients 

Vazhakkai (raw plantain)-2 nos

Turmeric powder-1/2 Tsp 

Oil -2-3 Tbsps 

For Masala 

Red chilli powder-2 Tsps 

Coriander powder-3 Tsps 

Kashmiri chilli powder-1/2 Tsp 

Cumin powder-1/2 Tsp

Asafoetida-1/4 Tsp 

Ginger garlic paste-1-2 Tsps 

Thick tamarind paste-1 Tsp 

Salt to taste

Method 

👉Peel the plantain and cut to round or oval shaped slightly thick slices, soak in water until use.Cook them in boiling water along with turmeric powder until 3/4 th done.Drain the water and set the cooked plantain aside.



👉In a plate add all the ingredients given under For masala and make a thick paste adding very little water. 




👉Smear this paste on the plantain and set aside for 5 minutes .





👉Now heat oil in a tawa add the plantain pieces gently one by one and roast them to golden brown colour in medium flame making sure to flip and cook both sides.








👉Serve hot with sambar, rasam , curd rice etc..
