Coimbatore arisi paruppu sadam is a traditional delicious South Indian rice and lentil dish that originated in the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Also known as "Dal Rice"or Paruppu Sadam ,this dish is a staple in many Tamil households and is enjoyed for its delicious taste and nutritional value and ease of preparation.
Coimbatore arisi paruppu sadam is prepared as a one pot meal by cooking rice (preferably parboiled rice but you can you use raw rice too) and lentils with a variety of spices and vegetables, which gives the dish a unique flavour. This dish is a staple in Tamil Nadu cuisine and is usually served with accompaniments like potato fry ,papad, pickle ,raita, chips, vadagam, etc.The arisi paruppu sadam is easy to prepare and can be served as a complete meal . The combination of rice and lentils provides a good source of protein, and the spices used in the dish give it a unique flavor.

One popular variation of Coimbatore arisi paruppu sadam is the addition of grated coconut and other vegetables like brinjal, drumstick, and broad beans. The coconut adds a nutty and sweet flavor to the dish.

Ingredients 

Raw rice-1 cup
Toor dal -1/2 cup
Small onions -15-20 nos 
Tomato-2 nos chopped 
Garlic -6-8 nos chopped fine
Green chillies -2 nos slit length wise
Red chillies -2-3 nos
Turmeric powder -1/2 Tsp
Sambar powder -1/2 Tsp
Salt to taste
Mustard seeds-1 Tsp 
Urad dal -1 Tsp
Bengal gram dal -1 Tsp 
Cumin seeds -1 Tsp 
Curry leaves few
Coriander leaves few chopped 
Gingelly Oil-2 Tbsps

Method 


👉Wash and soak the rice and dal together for 30 minutes in 2 1/2 cups of water set aside.


👉Heat gingelly oil in a pressure cooker, add mustard seeds, urad dal, Bengal gram dal, cumin seeds, red chilies, green chilies, curry leaves, garlic, small onions, tomatoes and sauté every thing well. Next add turmeric powder, Sambar powder, required salt mix well .



👉Add soaked rice and dal along with the water. Now add another 1/2 cup water (so totally 3 cups of water).





👉Bring the mixture to a boil and close the cooker and pressure cook for three whistles and a switch off the gas and allow the pressure to subside naturally. 



👉Next open the cooker and give a gentle mix without breaking the rice. 



Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with potato fry, chips, pickles etc..
