Kara Pori, also known as masala pori, is a popular South Indian snack that is crunchy and spicy, made with puffed rice and a blend of flavorful spices.
The history of Kara Pori can be traced back to the traditional South Indian snack called "Pori," which is made with just puffed rice and jaggery. The addition of masala or spices to this snack is said to have originated in the streets of Chennai,Tamil Nadu. It is said that vendors started adding a mixture of spices, such as red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, and roasted cumin powder, to Pori to make it more flavorful and spicy.

Kara Pori is typically made by roasting puffed rice along with spices powders like turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt, peanuts, roasted gram dal and crushed garlic in a hot pan until it becomes crisp and crunchy.
Kara Pori is a popular snack during festivals, especially during Diwali. It is also a favorite evening snack for many South Indians, who enjoy it with a hot cup of tea or coffee. The snack is often sold by street vendors in small paper cones, and its popularity has led to it being packaged and sold in stores across India.

Apart from being a tasty and addictive snack, Kara Pori is also relatively healthy. Puffed rice is low in calories and fat, making it an excellent snack for those watching their weight. The addition of spices not only enhances the flavor but also has several health benefits. For instance, chili powder is rich in capsaicin, which is known to boost metabolism and aid in weight loss.
