Horsegram Chutney / Kollu Chutney


Kollu Chutney is a delicious healthy and traditional South Indian style chutney made with horsegram. This kollu chutney goes well with idli and dosas. It is made by sauteeing ingredients such as horsegram, urad dal, ginger, garlic, red chillies, and spices, which are then ground to a fine paste and tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Ingredients

Horsegram -1/2 cup 

Urad dal-1 Tsp 

Pepper corns -1/2 Tsp 

Cumin seeds-1 Tsp 

Garlic-4 nos 

Ginger-1 inch piece chopped 

Red chillies-4-6 nos

Grated coconut-1/4 cup or 2 Tbsps

Tamarind - a small gooseberry sized 

Salt to taste 

Asafoetida a pinch

Curry leaves few 

Oil -2 Tsps

Method 

👉Heat a tsp of oil in a pan add horsegram(kollu) and saute until light golden brown .




👉To this add urad dal sauté for few seconds.


👉Next add cumin seeds, pepper corns, garlic ginger, red chillies, curry leaves, tamarind, salt and finally add grated coconut and sauté well.(You should get a nice reddish brown colour of the Horsegram).

👉Remove from fire and allow it to cool down completely .


👉Add little water and grind to fine paste and transfer to serving bowl .



👉In a tadka pan heat tsp of oil add mustard seeds and curry leaves and allow it to splutter, add this tempering to the chutney mix well and serve with idli, dosa etc..

Note -

✍️If you want it like thogayal (thick paste)add very less water for grinding this can be taken along with rice.

✍️Make sure you sauté the Horsegram well without burning it ( you should get a nice reddish brown colour ),then only the chutney will taste good and you won't have any gastric problems after eating.
