Shikanji, also known as Shikanjvi, is a classic North Indian summer drink that serves as the perfect blend of refreshment and flavor. Often referred to as Masala Lemonade, Shikanji stands out from the usual nimbu paani due to its unique addition of aromatic spices such as black pepper, roasted cumin powder, black salt, and coriander powder. These spices, combined with fresh lemon juice, sugar, and chilled water, create a tangy, slightly spicy, and utterly refreshing beverage that’s perfect for beating the heat.
This traditional drink is not only a thirst quencher but also a powerhouse of Vitamin C, thanks to the fresh lemons. Its ingredients provide numerous health benefits: cumin aids digestion, black salt balances electrolytes, and coriander powder has cooling properties. Shikanji is particularly popular during the hot Indian summers and is often enjoyed as a quick remedy to combat heat exhaustion or dehydration.
One of the great things about Shikanji is its versatility. You can adjust the sweetness, tanginess, or spice levels to suit your taste preferences. Additionally, preparing a large batch of Shikanji Masala powder in advance allows you to whip up this delightful drink anytime with minimal effort. The powder can be stored in an airtight container and used as a convenient spice mix for making Shikanji on busy days.
Traditionally, Shikanji is made with fresh ingredients and served chilled, sometimes with a touch of mint leaves for extra freshness. It is not only a healthy alternative to carbonated drinks but also a wonderful way to stay hydrated while enjoying a flavorful treat. Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering or simply relaxing at home, a glass of chilled Shikanji is sure to brighten your day.
