Kootu curry | Kerala style kootu curry

Kootu curry is one of the important side dish made during Onam Sadya. It is a traditional Kerala delicacy made with elephant yam,raw plantain, black chickpeas which is not only
cooked in coconut paste but is also topped with extra fried coconut shredding and coconut oil.This delicious kootu curry is an authentic Kerala dish and a must have during Onam Sadya .Check out how to make this traditional Kerala style Kootu curry recipe below.

Ingredients

Elephant Yam-1/2 cup (skin removed, washed n
chopped to cubes)
Raw plantain -1/2 cup (skin removed ,washed chopped to cubes)
Black chickpeas -1/2 cup soaked overnight
Red chilli powder -1/2 - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
Pepper powder -1/2 tsp
Jaggery -1-2 tsps
Salt to taste
Grated coconut -1/2 cup
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Red chillies -2 nos
Curry leaves few
Coconut oil-2 Tbsps

Grind Together 

Grated coconut -1/2 cup
Cumin seeds-1 tsp

Method

👉Pressure cook chickpeas for 3 whistles.Strain the chickpeas and reserve the water and chickpeas separately.


👉Heat a kadai add chopped yam and plantain, pour the reserved water .Add extra water if needed.Add turmeric powder .Now close the kadai and cook .


👉Meanwhile grind the coconut and cumin seeds coarsely by adding very little water, set aside.


👉Once the veggies are 3/4 th done add red chilli powder,pepper powder,salt, ground coconut paste and cooked chickpeas mix well.


👉Add jaggery and mix well.


👉Simultaneously heat coconut oil in a tadka pan add mustard seeds,red chillies, curry leaves and allow it to splutter .Next add grated coconut and saute until coconut turns golden brown colour.

👉Add this tempering to the Kootu curry.Mix everything well . Drizzle coconut oil on top.


👉Serve hot.

Note

✍️You can use pumpkin or ashgourd for this recipe.
✍️Lightly mash the veggies while cooking.
✍️You can avoid jaggery .
