Vazhaipoo thuvaiyal| banana flower chutney is an yummy, nutritious and traditional south Indian chutney variety made with banana blossom.
Vazhaipoo has numerous health benefits but we seldom use it as it takes a bit of effort to clean the flowers .
They are rich in vitamins A,C, and E .Rich in magnesium, potassium and iron .Rich in fibre.Has antioxidant properties .
Vazhaipoo is especially very good for women .It increases the progesterone level and thus prevents excessive bleeding during menstruation and after giving birth.It helps in lactation .It maintains the heath of the uterus and prevents breast n overian cancer .
It helps in weight loss.It has antimicrobial properties.It maintains blood sugar levels and blood pressure and thus maintains heart health.Maintains gastro intestinal health,prevents constipation.Has anti ageing properties.Used as natural antidepressant,prevents Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Make sure to include this super food in your diet atleast once or twice a week.
This vazhaipoo chutney is a very simple and basic dish.It is a best combination for rice served with a drizzle of ghee or gingelly oil.Check out the recipe below.

Ingredients

Banana flower-1 cup (cleaned, chopped n soaked in buttermilk)
Bengal gram dal -1 tbsp
Urad dal -1 tbsp
Cumin seeds-1 tsp
Red chillies -4 nos
Tamarind -small gooseberry sized
Salt to taste
Oil -1 tsp

Method

  👉Remove the banana flowers from the stalk and clean it by discarding the nerve and transparent sheet as shown in picture below.Chop them and keep soaked in buttermilk until use .

👉Now heat oil in a kadai add bengal gram dal,urad dal ,cumin seeds, red chillies and sauté well until the dal turn golden brown colour.

👉Remove from fire and transfer it to a mixie jar and allow it cool down a bit.
👉Again in the same kadai sauté the banana flower (after straining it from buttermilk) for 2-4 minutes until it becomes soft.


👉Add this to the mixie jar along with the dal ,now add tamarind ,salt and little water and grind to fine paste .


👉Serve with idli,dosa,rice etc..
