The day usually begins early in the morning. One of the most beautiful customs followed is the preparation of the “Kani”. The word kani means “that which is seen first.” Families arrange a tray with fruits like mango, banana, and jackfruit, betel leaves, flowers, gold or silver jewelry, a mirror, rice, and sometimes coins. It is believed that seeing these auspicious items first thing in the morning brings good luck and abundance throughout the year.

Homes are cleaned and decorated with colorful kolam (rangoli) designs at the entrance. Women draw intricate patterns using rice flour, symbolizing prosperity and welcoming positive energy. People wear new clothes, visit temples, and offer special prayers. Elders bless the younger members of the family, and in return, children show respect and seek their guidance for the year ahead.

Food plays a very important role in Tamil New Year celebrations. A special festive meal is prepared and served on a banana leaf. One of the highlight dishes is Mangai Pachadi, made with raw mango, jaggery, neem flowers, chili, and tamarind. This dish uniquely combines sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy flavors, representing the different emotions of life — happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, and fear.
