Thakkali sadam | tomato rice in electric rice cooker

Thakkali Sadam, or tomato rice, is a quintessential South Indian rice variety loved for its tangy and rich flavor. This dish is a staple in South Indian households, with each family having its own cherished version. Here, I’ve shared my family’s heirloom recipe where the rice is cooked in freshly extracted tomato juice, imparting a unique depth of flavor.

In this version, I’ve used an electric rice cooker, which simplifies the cooking process, ensuring perfectly cooked, fluffy rice every time. For an authentic touch, I’ve opted for seeraga samba rice, a variety known for its aromatic and slightly nutty taste. Avoid using basmati rice for this recipe, as it doesn’t complement the dish’s flavor profile.

Whether for a hearty meal at home or a flavorful lunchbox option, this recipe is a must-try. Read on to learn how to make this deliciously juicy Thakkali Sadam in an electric rice cooker.

Tips for Perfect Thakkali Sadam

1. Choose the Right Rice: Use seeraga samba or raw rice for the best texture and flavor. Avoid basmati rice, as it doesn’t absorb the tomato juice well.
2. Tomato Quality Matters: Use ripe, juicy tomatoes for a naturally rich and tangy flavor. Overripe tomatoes are ideal for extracting juice.
3. Fresh Tomato Juice: Blend the tomatoes to make fresh juice rather than using store-bought alternatives. Strain if needed for a smoother texture.
4. Spice Balance: Adjust spices to suit your taste. Add green chilies for heat and a hint of sugar to balance the tanginess.
5. Electric Rice Cooker: This method ensures even cooking and saves time. Stir the rice gently once mid-cooking to prevent sticking.
6. Avoid Overcooking: Add the rice and tomato juice in the correct ratio to ensure the grains remain separate and fluffy.
7. Enhance with Garnish: Finish with freshly chopped coriander and a drizzle of ghee for a fragrant and flavorful touch.

Why Cook in an Electric Rice Cooker?

Ensures uniform cooking without the need for constant monitoring.
Retains the vibrant color and flavor of the tomato juice.
Reduces the chances of burning or sticking compared to stovetop methods.
Simplifies preparation, especially when cooking for larger batches.
