Karunaikilangu masiyal is a very traditional and absolutely delicious Chettinad style masiyal variety. In this recipe the yam is cooked mashed and sauteed with onions, ginger tamarind extract and spices.You can use both pidikarunai (senai kilangu ) or elephant foot yam for this recipe. Karunaikilangu may be allergic to some people, it generally causes itchiness of throat so to prevent that you have to wash the kilangu in water three or four times  and cook it along to tamarind extract or lemon juice. Karunai kilangu or yam is very rich in vitamin C, B and in minerals like iron, manganese, selenium, calcium etc.

Karunaikilangu / Elephant foot yam -1/4 kg
Onion -2 nos chopped 
Ginger -1 inch piece finely chopped
Green chillies- 2 nos finely chopped
Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
Red chilly powder -1 tsp
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Urad dal -1 tsp
Cumin seeds -1 tsp
Curry leaves and coriander leaves few
Tamarind extract - from gooseberry sized tamarind
Jaggery -1 tbsp
Salt to taste
Oil -2 tsps


👉Remove the skin of the yam, wash well ,pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles along with turmeric powder and little water just enough to cover it.Strain the water and mash the yam well set aside.

👉Heat oil in a kadai add mustard seeds,urad dal,cumin seeds,curry leaves and allow it to splutter, next add ginger,green chillies,onions and saute well for 2 minutes.
Add red chilly powder,tamarind extract sauté for a minute.

👉Add the mashed yam mix everything well.
👉Add 1/2 cup water and adjust to desired consistency ,add salt and bring it to a boil.

👉Add jaggery ,chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
