How to make traditional Mohanthal sweet recipe or Gujarati Mohanthal mithai recipe

Mohanthal is a delicious and very traditional Gujarati sweet variety made with besan flour,sugar and ghee.It is very similar to South Indian sweet Mysore pak  but there is a slight difference in the procedure,but the ingredients are the same for both. Besan flour/Kadalai maavu-1 cup heaped
Sugar-3/4 cup
Ghee-1/4-1/2 cup
Milk- 2 tbsps
Cardamom powder a pinch
Saffron strings few soaked in 1/2 tsp warm milk
Pista and badam-few broken
Oil-1/2 tsp to grease the plate.


Mix besan flour,2 tbsps ghee,milk in a bowl crumble flour between your palms.
Seive it with big holed seive to get grainy mixture .(This step is very important to get nice texture in your sweet).

Heat the ghee in a non stick kadai add the besan flour and mix well .Keep stirring continuously for 5 mins till you get light brown colour and the mixture thickens a bit. Remove from fire set aside to cool.
Add the cardamom powder and saffron strings to it.mix well.

Now dissolve sugar in 1/4 cup water and bring it to 2 string consistency.

Pour the hot sugar syrup on to the besan mixture and keep stirring continuously until the sugar gets absorbed and the mixture thickens a bit (it takes about 2-3   minutes ,if you keep stirring for a long time the consistency will be lost and the mixture will become very crumbled)DO NOT KEEP ON FIRE.

Pour the mixture on to a greased plate, flatten a bit ,add broken pista and badam  over the top slightly press them and allow it to cool for 1 hour .

Cut into desired shapes .

Store in airtight container.
