Aloo Matar Gravy
Aloo Matar Gravy -Easy Classic North Indian Curry Recipe
There’s something incredibly comforting about a bowl of aloo matar gravy—a simple, homestyle curry made with potatoes (aloo) and green peas (matar) simmered in a flavorful onion-tomato base. This classic North Indian curry is a staple in many Indian households and is loved for its wholesome ingredients, mildly spiced taste, and versatility. Whether you pair it with steaming hot rice, jeera rice, roti, poori or paratha and even dosa, it makes for a delicious and satisfying meal.
Aloo matar curry is one of those recipes that’s perfect for both everyday meals and special occasions. It’s naturally vegan, gluten-free, and can be easily made without onion and garlic, making it ideal for festive or sattvic cooking too. The best part? It uses pantry staples and comes together in under 30 minutes!
The base of the gravy is made by sautéing onions, ginger garlic paste, and tomatoes with a handful of Indian spices like turmeric, Kashmiri red chili powder, garam masala, and coriander powder. The potatoes and peas soak up all these flavors beautifully, resulting in a mildly spiced, hearty curry that’s perfect for both kids and adults.
You can make this curry in a pressure cooker, Instant Pot, or a regular kadai—each method brings out a slightly different texture but tastes equally delicious. For a richer version, you can add a spoon of cream or cashew paste towards the end, but the traditional recipe is light and comforting just the way it is.
Whether you’re meal prepping, looking for a quick weeknight dinner, or cooking something simple yet tasty for guests, this aloo matar recipe is always a great choice. Plus, it’s budget-friendly and uses ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.Check out the recipe below.
