Kovakkai Karuppu Kondaikadalai Kootu


This Kovakkai Karuppu Kondaikadalai Kootu is an delicious , healthy , traditional Tamil Nadu style Kootu variety made with Kovakkai (known as Ivy gourd in English ) , black channa dal , moong dal and coconut paste.Adding the black channa dal increases the nutritional quality of the kootu. I have cooked this Kovakkai Kootu entirely in pressure cooker.This Kovakkai Kootu goes very well with sambar , rasam, etc.. it can also be had as a side dish for chapati. Ingredients 

Kovakkai -1/2 kg

Cooked Black Channa dal -1/2 cup

Moong dal-100 gms (washed and soaked for 1/2 hour)

Onion -2 nos chopped 

Tomato -1 no chopped 

Garlic -4-6 nos

Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp 

Sambar powder-1/2 Tsp

Salt to taste

Mustard seeds-1/2 Tsp

Urad dal-1 Tsp

Cumin seeds-1 Tsp

Red chillies-1-2 nos

Curry leaves few

Asafoetida-1/4 Tsp

Grated coconut-1-2 Tbsp 

Oil-2 Tsp 


Grind Together 

Grated coconut-1/2 cup

Cumin seeds-1 Tsp

Green chillies-1-2 nos

Method 

👉Wash and soak the black channa dal overnight, pressure cook for 5 whistles, drain water and  set aside.

👉Wash and soak the moong dal for 1/2 hour.

👉In a pressure cooker add Kovakkai,onion, garlic, tomato, soaked moong dal, turmeric powder, sambar powder, asafoetida and required water just enough to cover the veggies.



👉Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles,switch off the gas and allow the pressure to subside completely.



👉Now open the cooker and again turn on the stove. 


👉Mash the dal lightly and allow the kootu to boil .



👉Now add the cooked black channa dal, ground coconut paste, salt  and mix well and allow to boil for 5 minutes.








👉Meanwhile in a tadka pan heat oil add mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds, red chillies , curry leaves and allow it to splutter add this tempering to the kootu.



👉Finally add some freshly grated coconut and switch off the gas . Serve hot.
