Lobia masala | Black eyed peas masala  | Karamani masala


Lobia masala is a flavourful North Indian style gravy variety made with Black eyed peas known as Karamani in Tamil.This lobia curry or gravy is easy to prepare and goes very well with roti, chapati, rice, ghee rice etc..Check out how to make this delicious healthy lobia masala or Karamani masala recipe below.


Ingredients 

Lobia (Black eyed peas ) /Karamani-1 1/2 cups (soaked overnight)

Red chilli powder -1 Tsp

Turmeric powder -1/2 Tsp 

Coriander powder -2 Tsps

Jeera powder -1 Tsp

Kashmiri chilli powder-1 Tsp

Garam masala powder -1/2 Tsp 

Cinnamon -2 nos 

Cloves -2 -4 nos 

Cardamom-1-2 nos 

Bay leaf -1 no 

Cumin seeds-1 Tsp 

Salt to taste 

Ghee -2 Tsps 

Oil -2 -3 Tsps 

Coriander leaves few


For Masala 

Onion-3-4 nos

Tomato -3 nos

Green  chillies-2 nos

Ginger-1 inch piece

Garlic -4 cloves 

Cashews few

Method 

👉Wash and soak the lobia overnight or at least 6 hours before cooking.(Note- If you forget to soak the lobia pressure cook it for 8-9 whistles adding enough water.)





👉Grind the ingredients given for masala without adding any water to fine paste.




👉Heat ghee and oil in a kadai add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom , bay leaf and jeera . Allow it to splutter.



👉Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, jeera powder,Kashmiri chilli powder and sauté for few seconds in medium flame.




👉Add the ground masala paste rinse little water(1/4 - 1/2 cup) in the mixie and add to the paste mix well .





👉Boil the gravy for few minutes then add the lobia after draining the soaked water .





👉Now add salt and extra water (approximately 1 -1 1/2 cups) pressure cook for 3-4 whistles, switch off the gas and allow the pressure to subside completely .





👉Open the cooker and again switch on the gas.





👉Allow the gravy to thicken until desired consistency .



👉Meanwhile heat ghee in a tadka pan add garam masala powder and Kashmiri chilli powder sauté for few seconds and add this tadka to the gravy .




👉Garnish with coriander leaves , serve hot .

Note -

✍️If you have soaked the lobia overnight it cooks faster in just 2-3 whistles so be cautious while pressure cooking it.
