Aadi Kanji



Aadi kanji is an delicious healthy and traditional porridge variety made with raw rice and moong dal and is offered as neivedhanam to the Goddess Mariamman specially during Aadi Velli(Fridays on the Tamil month of Aadi July-Aug).It is later distributed to the devotees along with other prasadham like ragi koozh, thulluma etc.It is also called Mariamman kanji or arisi paruppu Kanji.Check out how to make traditional Aadi Velli Kanji recipe below.

Ingredients

Raw rice-1/2 cup 

Moong dal-1 Tbsp 

Boiled Milk-1/2 cup

Water-4 cups 

Salt to taste

Grated coconut-1-2 Tbsps 


Optional Toppings for serving -

Green chillies-1 no finely chopped

Ginger -1 inch piece finely chopped

Small onions-6-10 nos finely chopped

Coriander leaves and curry leaves few 

Ghee -1 tsp 

Jaggery-1 medium piece

Method

👉Wash the rice and dal well and transfer to a pressure cooker add 4 cups of water and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles and switch off the gas. Allow the pressure to subside completely.Once the pressure is released open the cooker and mash the rice and dal well .



👉To the mashed rice dal mixture, add required salt ,milk and dilute it by adding extra water as needed to adjust the consistency then switch on the gas.


👉Allow the mixture to boil for 5 mins in medium flame by stirring continuously.


👉Finally add grated coconut,mix well and switch off the gas.


👉Offer this prasadham to the Goddess as such along with a piece of jaggery and a tsp of ghee.


👉While serving to devotees or your family you can top it with small onions,ginger,green chillies, curry leaves and coriander leaves.

Note -

✍️You can coconut milk instead of milk.

✍️This Aadi Kanji should be in watery consistency.
