Aval Murukku or Poha Chakli or Poha Murukku

Aval murukku or poha chakli is a crispy crunchy delicious South Indian-style murukku variety made during festivals like Diwali and Krishna Jayanti. This murukku is made with processed rice flour and poha or aval flour and mixed with spices which is made into a dough pressed to murukku shapes using murukku presser and deep fried in oil. It is a very easy recipe and can be done quickly.

Ingredients

Processed rice flour(Idiyappam flour or kozhukattai flour)-1 cup

Poha (aval)-1/2 cup heaped

Pottukadalai (fried gram)-1/4 cup

Cumin seeds-1-2 tsps

Red chilli powder-1/2-3/4 tsp

Salt to taste

Asafoetida- 1/4 tsp

Melted butter or hot oil-1 Tbsp

Oil - for deep frying

Method

👉First powder the aval and roasted gram dal together and transfer to seive.Now sieve both a powders to a plate.



👉Add processed rice flour to the plate.



👉Add red chilli powder,salt, asafoetida,cumin seeds, melted butter or hot oil mix everything well.



👉Now add water little by little and knead a soft but firm dough. Cover the dough with moist cotton cloth until use to prevent drying.





👉Heat oil in a kadai for deep frying.To check if the oil is at right temperature drop a small piece of dough into it , if it rises immediately then the oil is ready now keep in medium flame throughout.



👉Meanwhile grease the murukku presser with oil.Place three hole disc into the presser.Also grease few flat ladles with oil.




👉Now fill the murukku presser with dough.



👉Press  murukkus gently on to a laddle or directly into hot oil.


 
👉Gently drop the murukku into hot oil. Donot disturb the murukkus for few seconds. Then gently flip them.





👉Cook in medium flame on both sides until the murukku becomes golden brown and oil stops bubbling.




👉Drain the excess oil in tissue paper.

👉Allow the aval murukku to cool down completely and then store in a airtight container.
