Kollu Rasam | Horsegram Rasam

Kollu Rasam or Horsegram rasam

Kollu Rasam or Horsegram Rasam is a nutritious, flavorful South Indian rasam variety that is packed with health benefits. Unlike traditional rasam recipes, this one uses dry roasted Kollu (horse gram) along with other aromatic spices to make a unique rasam powder, which is then used to prepare the rasam. This method enhances the earthy flavor of the horse gram, making it a comforting and aromatic dish.

The dry roasting technique sets this rasam apart from others. Instead of cooking the Kollu dal (horse gram) in a pressure cooker or boiling it, the gram is roasted to release its natural oils and flavors, which are then ground into a rasam powder along with spices like pepper, cumin seeds, and coriander. This results in a rasam that has a rich, deep flavor that’s a little different from the regular rasam varieties.

Kollu Rasam is not just about taste—it’s a powerhouse of nutrients. Horse gram is known for its high protein content, making it a great option for vegetarians looking to add more protein to their diet. It’s also considered an excellent remedy for common ailments like cold and flu due to its warm, soothing properties. Additionally, it’s known for aiding in weight loss and promoting digestion, making it a great addition to a healthy diet.

This easy-to-make recipe is a go-to in our family, especially during times when we need something quick and nutritious. It can be enjoyed as a soup or served with rice, making it versatile for different occasions. Kollu Rasam is the perfect comfort food for rainy days or during the flu season, thanks to its healing properties.
