Crispy, golden, and utterly irresistible, Venkaya Pakoda (Onion Pakoda) is a beloved South Indian snack that’s perfect for rainy days or festive gatherings. Made by slicing onions thinly and coating them in a spiced gram flour batter, this deep-fried delight offers a delightful crunch with every bite. The dish is quick to prepare, using simple pantry ingredients like besan (gram flour), rice flour, and aromatic spices like fennel seeds .


Onion Pakoda is not just a snack; it’s an emotion for South Indian households. The aroma of freshly fried pakodas is enough to bring everyone to the table. Serve it with coconut chutney or ketchup, and pair it with a hot cup of chai for the ultimate comfort food experience.


Ingredients

Besan flour -1 cup
Rice flour -1/4 cup
Onion -1 no big (diced to thin lengthy slices) or 2 medium-sized
Red chilly powder -1/2 tsp
Fennel seeds -1-2 tsp
Curry leaves few
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying

Method

👉 In a mixing bowl add all the ingredients and sprinkle water little by little and combine everything together so that they stick to each other, make sure you don't add to much water (as onions will release water too).

👉Heat oil in a kadai for deep frying.
 👉Now take a handful of dough and drop it in hot oil little by little. Cook in low flame until the colour changes to golden brown and oil stops bubbling. Drain the pakodas in tissue paper to remove excess oil.

👉Serve hot with tomato sauce.
