 Tomato Sambar | Thakkali Sambar

Tomato sambar or thakkali sambar

Tomato Sambar or Thakkali Sambar is a quintessential South Indian side dish loved for its simplicity, vibrant flavor, and versatility. This version stands out as it skips the use of traditional sambar powder and tamarind extract. Instead, a freshly ground coconut paste is used, which not only enhances the flavor but also gives the sambar a creamy texture and boosts its quantity, making it ideal for serving a crowd.

The sweetness and tanginess of ripe tomatoes are beautifully complemented by the aromatic coconut paste made with spices like cumin and red chilies. This unique preparation makes the sambar rich and flavorful without the need for tamarind, making it a lighter yet delicious option.

Tomato Sambar pairs perfectly with South Indian breakfast dishes like idli, dosa, pongal, or upma, and is equally delightful when served with steamed rice for lunch or dinner. Its quick preparation and easy-to-source ingredients make it a go-to recipe for both busy weekdays and special occasions.
