Vazhaikai Kootu | Plantain Kootu

Vazhaikai kootu or plantain kootu is a simple kootu variety which is made by combining cooked plantain, dhal and

coconut paste. It is not only very easy to make but tastes absolutely delicious. Check out how to make this traditional vazhaikai ootu or plantain kootu below.


Vazhakkai(Plantain)-2 nos diced into cubes
Bengal gram dhal-1/2 cup
Small onions-10 nos chopped
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Asafoetida a pinch
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Urud dhal-1/2 tsp
Oil-1 tsp
Curry leaves few
Coriander leaves few

Grind together-

Grated coconut-3 tbsps
Red chillies-5 nos
Small onions-6 nos
Cumin seeds-1 tsp


👉Grind the ingredients given for grinding to a fine paste set aside.
👉Pressure cook the Bengal gram dhal along with turmeric powder, small onions, asafoetida, 1/2 tsp oil and water just enough to cover the dal for one whistle set aside.(don't overcook it)
👉Boil the chopped plantain in water until it's 3/4th cooked, drain the excess water and set aside.
👉Heat oil in a kadai add mustard seeds, urud dhal, and curry leaves and saute for a minute.
👉Then add the cooked plantain followed by cooked dhal, salt and ground paste mix everything well. Cook it for 2 -4 minutes. Garnish and serve hot with rice, sambar, and rasam. It will be a good side dish for chappati too.
