Mango Dal | Mamidikaya Pappu

Mamidikaya Pappu, also known as mango dal, is a traditional delicacy from South Indian cuisine. This flavorful and tangy dish is a combination of raw mangoes (called mamidikaya in Telugu) and toor dal, tempered with spices. Its origins can be traced back to the Andhra Telangana regions, where it is enjoyed at festive feasts and regular meals alike.

The preparation of mamidikaya pappu is simple and straightforward. To begin, the toor dal is cooked and mashed before being tempered with spices. The mangoes are then cooked with spice powder, and the cooked dal is added and simmered for a few minutes before being garnished and served hot.

There are many regional variations of mango dal, with some recipes including onions and tomatoes, other vegetables, or coconut paste. Despite these differences, mango dal remains a nutritional powerhouse, rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Consuming this dish can boost immunity, improve digestion, and support healthy skin and vision.
