Kadala Curry Kerala Style In Pressure Cooker | Black Chickpeas Curry

Kadala curry in pressure cooker



Kadala curry is a delicious, healthy and staple dish of Kerala cuisine.This recipe is made with black chickpeas only. A special coconut masala paste, spices and masala powders are added to the chickpeas to make it a wholesome and yummy curry . It's typically served with Puttu  (steamed rice logs layered with coconut shredding s and sweet or savoury fillings) in Kerala.However, it can also be served as a side dish to appam,dosa, idiyappam ,parota and other South Indian dishes. Today I'm sharing the simplest way to prepare kadala curry in a pressure cooker, which is my family's take on the classic Kerala dish. Take a look at the recipe below for more information.


Ingredients

Black channa-1 1/2  cups soaked overnight
Onions-2 nos chopped
Tomato-2 nos chopped
Red chilly powder-1 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder-2 tsps
Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
Garam masala powder-1/2-1 tsp
Mustard seeds-1 tsp
Fennel seeds-1 tsp
Curry leaves and coriander leaves few
Coconut oil-2 -3 Tbsps
Salt to taste

For Masala-

(Saute these Ingredients in 1 tsp coconut oil and grind to a fine paste)
Grated coconut-1/2 cup
Onion-2 nos chopped
Fennel seeds-1 tsp
Cinnamon-2-3 
Cloves-3-4 nos
Cardamom-2
Green chillies-2-3 nos
Ginger -1-inch piece
Garlic-6-8 cloves

Method

👉Wash and soak the black chana overnight.



👉Saute the ingredients given for grinding in 1 tsp coconut oil and grind to a fine paste, set aside.(Make sure to sauté the coconut to light golden brown colour that's what gives the gravy the flavour and be cautious not to burn it).





👉Heat coconut oil in a pressure cooker add mustard seeds, fennel seeds, curry leaves,and allow it to splutter. Add onion saute well for 2 mins.Next add tomato sauté for a minute .


👉Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder and mix well.


👉Add ground coconut paste and saute for few seconds in medium flame.


👉Add the black chana after completely draining the water,then add required salt and 1 to 2 cups of water(chana should be completely immersed).




👉Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles, switch off the gas and allow the pressure to subside completely.

👉Open the cooker and again switch on the gas.



👉Allow the gravy to boil for 5 mins or until it thickens to desired consistency.



👉Add chopped coconut pieces .


👉Garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the gas and serve hot.
