Tomato Gravy/Thakkali Gravy

Tomato gravy or thakkali gravy is a very traditional and delicious South Indian style gravy variety. This gravy is made with tomatoes and special masala paste made with coconut and spices,this gives the gravy a unique flavour. It can be used as a side dish for almost all the tiffin varieties like idli,dosa,pongal,poori,appam, idiyappam and chapati. Adjust the consistency of gravy according to your taste preference,you can make it thick or thin as per the tiffin variety you are pairing it with. Ingredients

Tomatoes-5-6 nos chopped
Onions-1-2  nos chopped
Green chillies-2 nos(slit lengthwise)
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Kashmiri chilli powder-1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Curry leaves few
Coriander leaves few
Salt to taste
Oil -2 Tbsps

For Paste-

Grated coconut-1/2 cup
Red chillies-6-8 nos
Dhaniya seeds-1 tbsp
Cinnamon -2 nos
Cloves-2 nos
Cardamom-2 nos

Method

👉First roast the ingredients given under For paste in 1 tsp oil and grind them to a fine paste adding little water and set aside.




👉Heat oil in a kadai add mustard seeds,curry leaves,green chillies,onions saute well until the onions are half cooked.





👉Next add the tomatoes saute well and cook covered for 5 mins.


👉Mash the tomatoes lightly.



👉Now add turmeric powder and Kasmiri red chilli powder, salt and ground paste and mix well,saute for a minute.







👉Add 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water and again close with lid and cook for 5 mins.




👉Later remove the lid and allow the gravy to boil until it thickens to desired consistency.



👉Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.





Serve hot.
