Selavu Rasam
Selavu Rasam is one of the timeless treasures of Kongu Nadu cuisine, known not just for its comforting flavor but also for its powerful healing properties. Traditionally prepared during winter and rainy seasons, this tangy, spicy, and aromatic Kongu Nadu style rasam acts as a natural remedy to prevent cough, cold, and sore throat. Passed down through generations in Tamil households, Selavu Rasam reflects the perfect blend of taste and wellness that defines traditional South Indian food culture.
The name “Selavu” in Kongu Tamil refers to the spice mix or masala base made from freshly ground ingredients. The Selavu powder is a unique combination of black pepper, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, garlic, curry leaves, dry red chilies, and turmeric—all roasted and ground to perfection. These spices are not only rich in flavor but also have immense medicinal value in Ayurvedic cooking.
The rasam is typically prepared with tamarind extract, tomatoes and small onions, and the freshly ground selavu masala, simmered until the aroma fills the kitchen. A generous tempering of mustard seeds, curry leaves, and crushed garlic in ghee adds the finishing touch, creating a soul-warming dish that soothes the body from within.
