Sattu Sarbath With Salt
Sattu Sharbat is a traditional Indian summer drink made from roasted gram flour or chickpea flour (also known as sattu), water, and a few simple ingredients. Packed with nutrients, this refreshing beverage is not just delicious but also incredibly healthy and hydrating. It’s especially popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, where the hot climate calls for cooling and energizing drinks.
Sattu is often called the “poor man’s protein” because it’s affordable and rich in nutrients. It’s made by dry-roasting Bengal gram (chana dal) and grinding it into a fine flour. This flour is then mixed with water and various flavorings to make a cooling drink that can be either sweet or savory depending on your preference.
The sweet version of sattu sharbat usually includes jaggery (or sugar), lemon juice, and sometimes cardamom for flavor. The savoury version which I have posted here is more popular in rural areas and includes salt, black salt, lemon juice, roasted cumin powder, and chopped green chilies or coriander.
What makes sattu sharbat special is its many health benefits. It is rich in plant-based protein, iron, fiber, and magnesium, making it an ideal drink for boosting energy, aiding digestion, and staying cool during the summer. It keeps you full for longer, which can help with weight management, and it’s also good for people with diabetes due to its low glycemic index. Plus, it’s a gut-friendly and low-FODMAP option, which may suit people dealing with digestive issues like bloating or GERD.
This traditional drink is a natural energy booster, often consumed by farmers and laborers to sustain energy during long working hours under the sun. Today, more people are turning to sattu sharbat as a healthy alternative to packaged soft drinks and energy beverages.
Whether you’re looking for a natural protein drink, a home remedy for summer fatigue, or just something wholesome and hydrating, sattu sharbat is a simple and satisfying choice. Best of all, it’s quick to prepare and doesn’t require any fancy ingredients or cooking—just stir up and sip😋!Check out the recipe for this refreshing sattu sarbath recipe below.
