Vendakkai kichadi, also called vendakkai pachadi, is a Kerala-style curd and coconut side dish made with crisp fried okra (ladies finger). It's one of the essential items on the Onam sadya banana leaf spread, sitting alongside avial, thoran, and olan, but it's simple enough to make on any weeknight when you want something cooling and tangy with rice.
The dish comes together in three parts: the okra is sliced thin and shallow fried or sautéed until golden and crisp, a coconut-green chilli paste is ground fresh, and both are folded into whisked curd (yogurt). A final tempering of mustard seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilli in coconut oil is poured over the top just before serving, giving the kichadi its signature aroma. The result is a light, tangy, faintly spicy side that cools down a spicy sadya meal beautifully.
Kichadi vs Pachadi in Kerala cuisine — what's the difference?
This is one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is that it varies by region and household within Kerala. The most widely followed distinction is: kichadi is a savory preparation where mustard and often cumin are ground into the coconut paste, typically made with vegetables like okra, cucumber, or bitter gourd. Pachadi, on the other hand, tends to lean sweet-tangy and is commonly made with fruits like pineapple or mango, though vegetable pachadis exist too. In central and northern Kerala, this okra dish is usually called kichadi; in some southern parts of the state, the same preparation is called pachadi. So vendakkai kichadi and vendakkai pachadi often refer to the exact same dish — the name simply shifts by region.
Whichever name your family uses, this dish is a wonderful entry point into Kerala's yogurt-and-coconut based sadya sides, and a great way to use up fresh okra from the market.

Tips for the best vendakkai kichadi:
• Pat the okra completely dry after washing before slicing — this is the single biggest factor in avoiding sliminess.
• Fry the okra in small batches so it turns crisp rather than steaming in the pan.For best texture, don't overcook the okra — it should stay firm, not slimy.
• Use thick, well-beaten curd; sour curd will overpower the coconut and chilli.
• Let the coconut mixture cool before adding it to the curd, or the curd will split.
• Add the fried okra just before serving so it stays crisp instead of going soft in the curd.
• Stores in the fridge for a day, but tastes best fresh, made close to serving time.
FAQs
1. Can I make vendakkai kichadi without frying the okra?
Yes, you can bake or air-fry sliced okra at a high temperature until crisp and lightly browned, for a lighter version.
2. Why does my kichadi turn watery?
This usually happens if the okra wasn't dried well before slicing, or if the curd was too thin. Use thick, well-beaten curd and pat okra completely dry.
3. Can I prepare this in advance for Onam sadya?
The coconut-curd base can be made a few hours ahead and refrigerated. Fry the okra fresh and mix in just before serving to keep it crisp.
4. What can I serve vendakkai kichadi with?
It's traditionally part of the Onam/Vishu sadya, served with rice alongside sambar, avial, and thoran. It also works well as a side for any South Indian meal.
5. Is vendakkai kichadi the same as okra raita?
It's closely related — the addition of a ground coconut paste is what sets Kerala-style kichadi apart from a simple North Indian style bhindi raita.
