Green Peas Soup

This Indian style green peas soup is a warm, comforting, and wholesome dish that perfectly blends nutrition with traditional flavors. Made using fresh or frozen green peas, aromatic Indian spices, coriander leaves, and a touch of fresh cream, this soup is both satisfying and nourishing. It is ideal for chilly evenings, light dinners, or as a healthy starter for Indian meals.

Green peas are naturally rich in plant-based protein, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, making this soup a great option for anyone looking for a healthy yet delicious recipe. In Indian cooking, peas are often paired with spices to enhance their natural sweetness, and this soup does exactly that. The use of mild spices like cumin, black pepper, and garam masala adds warmth without overpowering the taste of peas.

The base of Indian green peas soup usually starts with sautéed onions and garlic, which bring depth and aroma to the dish. Ginger adds a subtle heat and aids digestion, while green chilies can be adjusted according to taste. The peas are then simmered until soft and blended into a smooth, creamy texture. This creates a naturally thick soup without the need for flour or heavy thickeners.

Fresh coriander leaves play an important role in this recipe. They add a refreshing herbal flavor and a bright green color, making the soup visually appealing and aromatic. Coriander also enhances digestion and complements the sweetness of green peas beautifully. A final swirl of fresh cream gives the soup a rich, silky finish and balances the spices, making it perfect for both adults and kids.

Indian style green peas soup can be customized easily. You can make it vegan by skipping fresh cream or replacing it with coconut milk. For a protein boost, serve it with toasted bread, croutons, or even roasted paneer cubes. This soup pairs well with garlic naan, multigrain toast, or can be enjoyed on its own as a light meal.

Whether you are looking for a healthy green peas soup recipe, a comforting Indian soup, or an easy winter soup idea, this dish fits perfectly. It is simple to prepare, packed with flavor, and suitable for everyday cooking as well as special occasions.

Method

✍️Heat a pan and add butter. Once melted, add cumin seeds, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaf, garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a few seconds until aromatic.

✍️Next, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 2 minutes until slightly soft.

✍️Add the frozen peas and pour in about 1½ cups of water, or just enough to cover the vegetables. Add a handful of coriander leaves along with the stems and mix well.

✍️Cover and cook for 5–7 minutes if using frozen peas. If using fresh peas, cook for 10–15 minutes or until tender. (This soup can also be prepared in a pressure cooker.)

✍️Once cooked, drain the peas and transfer to mixie jar and reserve the cooking liquid as stock for later use. Remove and discard the bay leaf.

✍️Allow the peas and onion mixture to cool completely, then grind it into a fine paste.

✍️Strain the paste to obtain a smooth, purée-like consistency.

✍️Add this purée back into the reserved stock and mix well.

✍️Place the pan back on heat, add salt as required, and stir. Bring the soup to a boil and adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.

✍️Finally, add fresh cream, mix well, and let it boil for 1–2 minutes. Switch off the heat.

✍️Serve hot, garnished with crushed pepper, chili flakes, toasted bread pieces, or croutons. Enjoy 😋
